The Veiled Prophet of Khorassan was an impostor. J.L. Borges describes him as a masked avenger of unbearable beauty, but in actual fact the man whose name was Hakim, born in the land of Turkestan, a desert man, of voice so sweet for it contrasted with the gruesome mask, who once promised to reveal the face when every man on Earth professed the new law, turned out to be an ugly, cowardly, and defenseless surprise. The kind you squash with vigorous rigor and immediately forget, and go along with your daily business. …

“That’s not me making that noise, it’s the mask!”

1. The arrival of Virtual Reality as a mainstream storytelling medium raised all kinds of questions. Most of them were and continue to be asked about the internet in general, and about games and interactive fiction in particular — they have to do with depth, formats, tone, perspective, the definition and the role of the audience and what it can do with or in the story. VR was but the latest addition to this on-going and possibly never-ending debate about how we immerse ourselves in fiction.

‘Dave Chappelle: Sticks & Stones’ — Netflix

Much has already been said, and much will continue to surface on our media feeds in the future about Dave Chappelle’s “Sticks & Stones” Netflix special. What has been said ranges from admiration and surprise to shock and outrage. We won’t dwell on those feelings here, for they are better kept in the internal, intimate, and ongoing dialogue between performer and audience.

The only two really important aspects about the performance are this: on October 2018, Mr. Chappelle was honored with the W. E. B. …

A previsão é atroz.

1. Atraso

#micronetworks is a public conversation about the future of networked communication.

The emergence and evolution of distributed, blockchain-based global communication protocols raises important questions about how cultural producers can participate and thrive in digital systems.
Early 21st century communication platforms like Google and Facebook have stabilized their business models around the monopoly of behavioral data and user identity. Their dominance has contributed to a digital economy based almost exclusively on the constant exchange between human attention and advertising targets.

Blockchains, cryptocurrencies, tokens and their resulting networks of interest and investment represent the beginning of a new conversation about information architectures.

After the network, on top of it, are digital platforms. They are vertical arrangements, interconnected and global, at war and in collaboration with each other. They embody the governing logic and the technical infrastructure of the emerging geopolitical disorder. This is a fragmented, chaotic, ambivalent and recursive state of affairs that somehow manages to encompass and thrive on the mundane and the impossible, on the sublime and the unspeakable.

Identity, autonomy, media, the economy, borders and the power to control them, aesthetics, language, music, what is true and what is not: everywhere you go these things will surprise you with…
